Why a Voice Crack Can Matter More Than a Perfect Note

Imperfection becomes expressive when the song has brought the singer to the edge honestly.

A cracked note is not automatically authentic. Singers can manufacture roughness as easily as producers can remove it, and strain without control is simply strain.

But when the break arrives at the point where the lyric has asked too much of a polished voice, it can reveal the body's argument with the words. The sound briefly carries effort as well as pitch.

Perfection shows what a singer can command. The right imperfection shows what the song required.
