Gospel Ad-Libs Are a Form of Storytelling
The written lyric states the position. The ad-lib tells us what it costs the singer to stand there.

An ad-lib is often described as decoration or vocal display. In Gospel, the strongest ones work more like marginal notes: a second account of what the song means while it is being sung.
A name is repeated, a sentence breaks, a private phrase slips between written lines. These decisions place experience around the lyric without changing its central claim.
That is why copying the notes rarely copies the effect. The notes matter less than the reason the singer needed to leave the page.
