In Praise of the Quiet Worship Song

Not every record needs a room. Some need a kitchen at 6am.

The default scale of modern worship is large. Big room, big chorus, big ceiling. It is a legitimate mode and it is not the only one.

“Be Still and Know,” “Still Waters (Psalm 23)” and “More Like Jesus” all work at conversation volume, and Phil Wickham's voice memo version of “What An Awesome God” shows what a big song sounds like with the room removed.

Why the quiet versions last

Because most of a person's religious life happens alone and undramatically. A catalogue that only knows how to sound like Sunday leaves six days uncovered.
