How Christian Pop Learned to Whisper
Small drums, close vocals and records built for headphones changed the emotional scale of the format.

Christian pop spent years arranging every idea for the back row. The current quieter language begins with a different imagined listener: one person, one pair of headphones, no need to project across a room.
Close vocals change what a lyric can survive. Plain words feel intentional. Doubt can remain unresolved. A singer does not have to turn conviction into volume before the listener believes it.
The whisper is not less public. It travels farther precisely because it feels as though it was recorded at speaking distance.
